An Invitation to Learning Engineering

The Challenge

Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice in Learning Solutions

Many professionals involved in designing and implementing learning solutions—such as instructors, instructional designers, and educational technologists—often rely on intuition or established practices without systematically testing and validating their approaches. This results in learning solutions that may not effectively address learners' needs or leverage the full potential of the learning sciences.

Key Challenges:

  • Lack of Data-Driven Approaches: Learning solutions are frequently based on hypotheses that aren't tested through data collection and analysis.
  • Underutilization of Learning Sciences: There's a disconnect between empirical research in learning sciences and its practical application in instructional design.
  • Limited Sharing of Insights: Effective solutions and insights are not consistently documented or shared within the professional community.
  • Need for Professional Development: Professionals require structured training to develop competencies in learning engineering methodologies.

Empowering Professionals Through a Learning Engineering Micro-Credential Program

Our project aims to develop a comprehensive e-learning micro-credential program that equips professionals with the knowledge, skills, and tools to effectively apply learning engineering principles.

Introduce Learning Engineering Concepts

  • Provide a foundational understanding of learning engineering, its history, and its relevance to current educational challenges.
  • Highlight the importance of data-generating designs that lead to actionable insights.

Develop Competencies Across Key Domains

  • Offer in-depth training aligned with the Learning Engineering Competency Framework, covering areas like Data Collection and Analytics, Ethics and Inclusion, Learning Design, and Systems Thinking.
  • Enable learners to demonstrate mastery through assessments or recognition of prior learning.

Facilitate Practical Application

  • Create opportunities for learners to apply learning engineering methodologies to real-world challenges.
  • Encourage the use of tools like the Learning Engineering Case Guide 1.0 and LEED Tracker for documenting and reflecting on their projects.

Certify and Recognize Expertise

  • Provide a structured pathway to earn a micro-credential at three levels, validating their competencies and enhancing their professional credentials.
  • Support workforce development by meeting industry needs for skilled learning engineers.

Foster a Community of Practice

  • Promote collaboration and knowledge sharing among professionals in the field.
  • Encourage the dissemination of effective practices and insights to the broader community.
